New Zealand Classic Car 377, May 2022

We feature two of the most famous screen cars of all time in this ‘TV special’ issue. Almost certainly New Zealand’s best Dukes of Hazzard’s General Lee tribute car and a stunning motor in its own right, and an equally dedicated tribute Knight Rider K.I.T.T. car. As always, the owner’s stories go a long way to making these cars so special. We’ve also got a tribute to the real Jetsons car from the ’50s, Chrysler’s nearly-but-not-quite Turbine car and ‘the bold and the beautiful’ Alfa Romeo Zagata. We check out another tribute of sorts, in a mint ‘restomod’ Mk 1 Escort, plus a Datsun 120Y race car. Motorman gives us his take on the fortunes and foibles of twin-engined cars and — there’s that word again — we pay tribute to one of the all-time great Formula 1 drivers, Gilles Villeneuve.
