I always wanted my own magazine. Nearing 15 years in the industry I’ve worked in almost every role within print — I’ve used masking tape to protect the soles of shoes on fashion shoots, written the celebrity feature, and become fed up with big media companies and gone freelance. Starting as an editorial assistant, I worked my way up with the goal of becoming an editor. But when I reached editor in chief, I discovered I wanted more. This marked my first time travelling overseas for work and my first time being away from home for such an extended period. The decision carried inherent risk, including navigating the unfamiliar city, adjusting to a new environment, being away from the support and care of my family, and potentially not booking enough work. However, the possible benefits were significant: a chance to expand my work in an international market, gain exposure in a new environment, and broaden my industry experience, to name a few.
